Anticipation of the release of the Motorola Droid couldn’t have been bigger given the out-of-this-world commercials and the much-hyped Google Android 2.0 mobile operating system and the handset’s early sales match the expectations.
According to early reports, the Motorola Droid sold a whopping 100,000 units over the weekend as it launched with Verizon in the United States, equally fully half of the units the provider had originally stocked. Apple’s iPhone may have sold one million units in its first weekend but, given the fledgling competition (Palm’s Pre sold only about 65,000 units its first weekend), Droid’s number are quite impressive.
The Christmas season is fast-approaching and this should keep Droid sales on the rise for the next couple of months. A true iPhone-killer? That remains to be seen.
