Just when you thought you couldn’t power on a mobile phone without seeing a Facebook logo on it somewhere comes Sony’s announcement that access to the popular social networking platform is making its way to the Playstation 3.
The coming firmware update to version 3.10 will enable users to easily link their Playstation Network account with their Facebook account, offering the easy ability to automatically update the Facebook profile with information concerning trophy wins, new purchases and in-game event information.
For both Facebook users and PS3 owners less-than-excited about this new integration, Sony has vastly improved the built-in browser on the console in order to display Facebook profiles more accurately, allowing Twitter to also be presented cleanly; Sony was quick to point this out to potential PS3 tweeps in its press release.
With Microsoft’s recent efforts to support Facebook, Twitter and last.fm on its Xbox 360 console, this move by Sony appears only slightly useful in comparison although the deep integration the PS3 will offer and the ability for game developers to take advantage is novel – for now.
